Slayton is the county seat of Murray County, and has a population of 1,940 according to the 2020 Census.
The Murray County Central school district is located in Slayton, with West Elementary and the MCC High School. The city has a municipal swimming pool known as Slaytona Beach West. Slayton is also where the Murray County Medical Center is located.
A vibrant main street is filled with various small businesses and an active Chamber of Commerce. Two newspapers and a radio station are located in Slayton.
